I am old enough to remember when what is commonly called "virtue signalling" was instead called "setting a good example".

So let me get this straight: First, it was Elon. Now, it is Mark. Two guys are removing all moderation rules on social media. And are people asking another billionaire to build alternative social media? Do you even hear yourself? That is not going to fix anything. Maybe we should go back to the days of blogs, mailing lists, individual forums, and RSS feeds and end this madness of centralized social media apart from the federation. I’m just saying

Since removing my presence on Meta/X and going all in on fedi, the discourse I used to participate in over how "free" vs "hate" speech should be regulated by private platforms just seem so distant and irrelevant.

Now I have access to a big global, social network that isn't trying to hook me on notifications ... mostly run by people who have some form of actual accountability to their community.

I wish more of my friends and colleagues could choose to experience that.

'“Immunity debt” provided a simple, easy-to-grasp explanation that was repeated over and over by media, scientists and physicians alike, until it took hold in the population. This is how dis/misinformation spreads. Anyone who pointed out that’s not how the immune system works was drowned out by this loud chorus. To this day, the purely made up and misleading concept of “immunity debt” stubbornly endures.'

Thinking of Aaron Swartz today & I’m stuck on this photo - he & OpenAI CEO Sam Altman (both circled) each scraped 1000s of docs but one did it to make the knowledge free for all while the other did it to make $$$$ through probabilistic plagiarism. The US DOJ only came after one of them & the other is feted by tech bros and executives.

Thank you Aaron for so much, for RSS, for Markdown, for Creative Commons and more. I’m sorry our society failed you.

Trudeau Coasted on Progressive Vibes, But Served the Interests of Corporations

Canadians flocked to food banks and inequality rose as corporations profited under Trudeau. He wasn’t “far to the left.”

Confirmed. ChatGPT is actively indexing the Fediverse, even small servers like mine who have not explicitly consented to their indexing.

So while people on Mastodon got angry about Mastodon having built-in discovery features, ChatGPT just went ahead and slurped up all your posts.
